Made-to-measure PVC sliding windows on the WDS SL 60 system. A sliding window doesn't compete with a side-hung one; it solves a different problem. When the opening is wide, when there is a sofa, a worktop or a table pushed up against the window, or when a terrace has no room for a leaf swinging inwards, the slider is the only one that doesn't steal space.

Sliding or side-hung? Which insulates better and when it pays off

Where the slider wins

  • It opens by gliding and doesn't steal space, even with furniture pushed up against the window
  • It ventilates without the wind catching it and leaves the way clear
  • On the Mediterranean coast, where you ventilate for far more hours than you heat, the difference in Uf barely shows on the bill

Where side-hung wins

  • With the same profile and the same glass, a side-hung or tilt-and-turn window insulates better than a sliding one
  • A side-hung window closes with rubber seals compressed by multipoint hardware; a slider, with brush seals that rub against the leaf and let a little more air and noise through
  • In numbers: Uf from 1.67 W/m²K for the WDS SL 60 against the 1.3 of the 70–76 mm side-hung systems in the catalogue

The rule of thumb

Side-hung in bedrooms and living rooms facing the street, sliding wherever space calls the shots: a kitchen with the worktop under the window, a small bedroom, a glazed sunroom or a terrace where an open leaf gets in the way. Perfect insulation is no use if the window can't be opened.

WDS SL 60: leaves, sizes and configurations

The WDS SL 60 is a 60 mm deep in-line sliding system with leaves that run on parallel tracks. It takes one to four moving leaves, and each leaf can reach 1600 mm wide and 2300 mm tall. That covers most openings in a home.

  • Bathroom or hallway1 + fixed

    Moving leaf and fixed sidelight

A single moving leaf that slides over a fixed sidelight. The answer for the small openings in a home.

  • Living-room window3–4 leaves

    Lighter leaves

Compared with one giant double leaf, each leaf weighs less, runs better and the rollers last longer. For an opening of more than 3 metres, four leaves of 80 cm perform better than two of 160.

  • Floor-to-ceiling terracePatio door

    Sliding patio door

Closing off a floor-to-ceiling terrace opening is a sliding patio-door system, which is a separate category in the catalogue.

Glass, roller shutter and colour

  • Glass

It is chosen with the same logic as for a side-hung window, with one proviso: in a 1600 × 2300 leaf the glass weighs a lot, and the rollers carry that weight. For kitchens and bathrooms a standard double-glazed unit is enough; for a living-room window facing the street low-emissivity glass is worth it, and on façades with afternoon sun, low-emissivity with solar control.

  • Roller shutter

If the opening has a roller-shutter box, measure the clear height below the box and bear in mind that the shutter will cover the whole width, including any leaves that don't move.

  • Colour

The profile takes laminate on both faces or on the outside only, with the same woodgrains and plain colours as the rest of the WDS catalogue. White is still the most requested for kitchens and bathrooms; anthracite and grey, for living-room windows that have to match the façade.

Measuring, configuring and receiving the slider

  1. Measure the opening

Width and height at three points each, and you keep the smallest. Into bare masonry, take off 10–15 mm per side for clearance and foam; if you are replacing an old slider without removing the sub-frame, measure the inside clear width of the sub-frame.

  2. Configure

In the configurator you pick dimensions, number of leaves, glass, laminate colour and hardware, and the price including VAT appears on the spot. There is no per-square-metre rate; the amount depends on the specific combination.

  3. Production and delivery

Production starts once the order is confirmed and the slider arrives in 3–4 weeks, shipped anywhere in mainland Spain. A four-leaf one travels assembled in its frame and takes up a fair bit of room, so it is worth having space and someone to help unload.

  4. Payment and warranty

Payment is online by card, Google Pay, Apple Pay, Bizum or bank transfer. The system carries a three-year warranty against manufacturing defects.

Two details almost nobody thinks about

In a two-leaf slider, the free opening when it slides back is a little less than half the total width, because the leaves overlap. And when configuring, say which leaf you want at the front, looking from inside: you then notice it every day when you open it.
